What You Might Not Know About Mobility Scooters

A mobility scooter might be right for you. If you are planning to visit someone or taking a vacation, you can take your scooter with you and get the most out of this beautiful weather!

For many individuals with mobility disabilities, a powered scooter is an attractive alternative to a manual or powered wheelchair.  Scooters are often lighter, more compact, and more maneuverable than power chairs, and in many people’s eyes their appearance is more appealing.

Transporting your scooter can be more simple.

Most scooter owners find it necessary at some point to transport the scooter. If a van with a lift or public transportation is to be used, it may be advisable to consider a scooter with a narrow wheelbase and smaller overall profile to be certain that the scooter can be accommodated by the lift and be sufficiently maneuverable to be used on buses and other public transit vehicles.

Different options to transport the scooter include:

- Scooter carriers (that attach onto a vehicle's bumper or trailer hitch)
- Loading aids (help put the scooter into vehicles with a large cargo space)
- Scooters that break down into smaller components for storage in the vehicle

At HealthNorth we offer mobility scooters and are always willing to help you choose one that is right for you.

Come into HealthNorth and let us help you!

Safety in the Shower

Here are a few tips for keeping your shower safe and decreasing the risk of shower injuries. There are a few items you can install to ensure your safety from slippery falls!

Grab Bars:

These are convenient in slippery tub and shower areas. Grab bars can be installed vertically or horizontally to meet your needs. These will be able to help steady you in case of a fall.

Floor Mats and Shower Treads:

The shower floor can become very slippery and difficult to stand firmly on. If safety treads are placed all along the tub floor it will become a lower risk zone for slipping and falling. You can also place non-skid rubber backed floor mats outside the shower for extra precaution. When stepping out, the mat will not slip from underneath you.

Bath Benches and Chairs:

Bath benches and chairs allow an individual to shower and bathe in comfort. These are especially great for people with limited mobility. Chairs and benches with holes will let the water drain and make the chair less slippery.

Check out our HealthNorth products that ensure safety and comfort in the shower!

Your Perfect Match For Complete Mobility

In the United States alone, a little over 6.8 million Americans use mobility devices to assist them with everyday activities. Around 6.1 million people use mobility devices such as canes, crutches, and walkers. The walker is currently used by 1.8 million people on a daily basis!

At HealthNorth, our purpose is to enable our clients to remain independent and in their homes through a combination of medical services, equipment, and supplies. Our Mission is to assist our clients in maintaining a dignified presence within their community.

As summer quickly approaches, a medical walker, cane, or wheelchair can be a great way to enjoy life in a manner that’s both secure, independent and essential for a healthy lifestyle! Whether you are looking to regain your love for the great outdoors or want to become a social butterfly once again, we have the perfect resources for you!

A cane might be the perfect way to maximize your ability to enjoy the warmer weather! To obtain maximum support from a cane it must be a proper fit and used correctly. Here are 5 Tips on how to size and use a cane:

1. Consider the functionality of the cane-not only its appearance.

2. In order to select from various styles of canes, consider the stability each offers.

3. It is important to choose a cane that is lightweight.

4. In order to select the proper length for a cane, make sure to stand up straight with your shoes on and your arms at your sides. The top of the cane should reach the crease on the underside of your wrist. If the cane fits properly, your elbow will be flexed 15-20 degrees when you hold the cane while standing.

5. It is important to make sure that you have a good grip of the cane and that your fingers and thumb do not overlap.

Take advantage of the great weather this spring and summer by letting us help you find your perfect match for complete mobility!
